Ransomware

Recently there has been a spike in ransomware cases. We have had machines brought to us that have contained ransomware and the outcome is grizzly. Ransomware is a type of virus that is installed on your machine either through a non-legit software installer that looks to be genuine or by simply clicking on a bad web link during online surfing.

Once installed, ransomware will encrypt your files and data, possibly even the operating system so that it cannot load into windows. It will then continually ransom you to pay a fee either in cash or bit coins. Usually the amounts the attackers ask for are absurd, hundreds of pounds.

In any case of infection, usually the effected computer files will be irreversibly encrypted and therefore destroyed, regardless of whether or not you pay the ransom. It is also worth noting that this will also usually include Google drive and Dropbox areas, meaning files start to be replaced on cloud storage by encrypted files. The only safe storage would be any drive that was not connected to the computer at the time of the infection occurring.
